Economics has been one of the most controversial topics in the initial years of Pope Francis’ pontificate. His views about poverty, money, market and capitalism have detonated a bitter discussion among economic agents and economists, some defending and some attacking the papal teaching on these issues. e purpose of this book is not to make an economic analysis of this debate, but to read carefully what Francis has said, in order to better understand and follow him.
The book is divided in two parts. On the first, «Francis and the economy», there is a presentation of life and character of Jorge Bergoglio in what regards economics. His teaching as cardinal are also briefly perused. Then follows a description of the first months of the Pontificate, until the start of the economic controversy, detonated by some statements in Evangelii Gaudium, published November 2013.
The second part, «e Economics of Francis», is devoted to the consideration of the position of the Pope about the several economics issues. e first section deals with the «economic canon» of Pope Francis, the basic attitude which he frequently repeats. en follows a description of the Pope position on specific topics in economics. Special attention is devoted to his social encyclical Laudato Si, his original contributions to the social doctrine of the Church and the specific solutions and policies he proposes
